Regardless of the focus mode, you have automatic calibration for all your lenses as the focus detection is in the exact same plane as the image sensor, always. The 24-70 lens doesn't go as long as the 24-120 f/4 but as soon as you use it on the camera, you realize why they went for this size. It is the perfect walk-around lens and light enough not to need to think about leaving it at home. The lens is sharp across the frame and the lock mechanism is actually quite nice. It doesn't creep.
Probably the most versatile Nikon on the market to date, Z7 is proving to be the best all-around SLR for the fans of the brand. In fact, its modest looks is probably the only distraction for potential buyers. You may not be convinced until you start using it.
Inside this small body is a big full-frame sensor capable of delivering excellent color rendition, sharpness and dynamic range. I took it through several difficult tests and the results were superb. I cannot imagine a situation where 45 MP image could not deliver resolution to make a nice big photo. I was able to print 16x20 with my old 12 MP camera, so this one can produce an even bigger print. Straight-out-of-the-camera files from Z7 are 18x25 inches. Extrapolated even modestly in post-processing they can be much bigger. White balance seems accurate, no complaints. Dynamic range is on the level where the competition is today, not more not less (yet still pathetic compared to film). Shooting in RAW format will help reduce the risk of losing shadows. I was able to recover deep shadows almost from the brink with little noticeable noise. Aspect ratio (3:2) is purely a matter of taste. I really prefer my old 16:9 DX ratio. This is configurable, though. Low light / high ISO shots are surprisingly clean, even at 9000 ISO it will produce usable images.
My biggest fear was switching to electronic viewfinder from the optics. I knew it was going to be a poor copy of reality. It took a few days but I got used to seeing things this way. But I am not yet sure what depth is covered by focus. Still, seeing the world through a periscope was an enjoyable part of photography, and I will miss it.
I wanted a high megapixel camera for my portrait shoot and besides many other reasons I can give you, one of the biggest reason, it shoots video, and not just shoot video, you can actually take pictures while shooting video...Simultaneously (Though its 8MB file which is enough for me sometimes when I really needed). Not to mention, throughout the years I have now a collection of Nikon lenses and now I am able to use them all through their FTZ adapter...This is priceless to me
I recently received my Nikon Z7, I went out for my first outdoor photoshoot. Being able to use all my previous lenses and all my Prophoto lighting gear that is dedicated to Nikon was absolutely amazing. The camera performed flawlessly. Images have almost as Medium format camera looks to them. I shot handheld video with my 105mm f/1.4 lens and while shooting video I was taking pictures and photo/Video looks amazing. I can tell you I have been using XQD cards sine D4 time and I use it now with my D5 and I use a second card slot for overflow purpose...XQD is a great, reliable, fast card. Never had an issue with that.
I am beyond happy with Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera
