Very versatile, but a bit heavy and bulky. Tripod collar is solid and can be easily removed. Focus is great, even at night. For reference, I got several clear lunar shots at 1/500 of a second and 500 mm on my D750 - handheld!
The lens arrived 3 days early when I wasn't expecting it and it was a very nice surprise. I ordered the bundle with the backpack and software. The backpack seems to have been used because it had an open pack of AAA batteries in one of the small compartments and some kind of black and silver bag was wadded up in the main compartment, it may be some type of cover for a light but the backpack is in perfect condition otherwise.
Good lens but a bit heavier than anticipated. The package in general is very good. Love the case.
I am new to photography. I especially love photographing wildlife. This lens does not disappoint. It's a little heavy but with the VR lens I can hold and take beautiful pictures.
This was is a tough review to make due to the various factors involved. Over all the lens is a very good investment. The IQ is sufficient, but honestly, for the size of the lens I was surprised that the IQ wasn't a little better at 500mm, especially in details of bird feathers at relatively short ranges. Over all though, definitely worth the money for the 'lens' itself, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again if I lost/damaged it, no question.
Just received today and gave it a quick test of a few hundred images using a D600. I can't find any faults. Based on my sample I'm very happy with this lens which has several features and capabilities I wanted. It is a great balance in size and cost for its tele range and performance. After hauling around and shooting larger F2.8 pro tele lenses in this range, this smaller size will be a lot more practical. I'm much more likely to have this lens with me when I need it.
Size and weight: I don't find the weight to be an issue when shooting handheld, but the larger diameter makes it a challenge to fit in my photo backpack since the barrel size is much larger than "normal" 77mm Nikon lenses. It's only an inch longer than the 300mm F4 I had in the pack, so the length isn't really the issue. It's a little less than twice the weight of that 300mm with a 1.4TC, a combo I consider fairly light.
You want a reasonably priced good performing long tele I think purchase of this lens is low risk. If you don't like it you won't have a problem reselling it. For image quality and speed it certainly beats stacking TC's on the shorter teles. The relatively light weight and VR make hand-holding very practical. But the large diameter makes it a bit of a challenge to put in your bag. Image post-processing should probably always include removing chromatic aberration.
I purchased this lens during the last sale. I previously owned the Tamron 150-600 (g1) for Nikon F, and a Panasonic 100-300 for micro 4/3rds. I have paired this lens with the Nikon Z7 and so far I am happy with the results. I find the best results when keeping the lens under 450mm. I am still getting used to the combo, but I am pretty happy with the results.
When using the vr along with the Nikon Z7 ibis, the lens provides a very stable image and can capture sharp still subjects at 1/200 sec at full zoom. Tracking with the Z7 has been a mixed bag... I am still getting used to the Z7 and its various tracking modes, but I think the f5.6 aperture can be a limiting factor.
