I'm not a pro photographer so the ease of finding the setting I want was important to me. It's amazing what this camera can do for the price! and being able to quickly download to my smart phone was such a plus! The included software was an unexpected delight, especially the Corel Fastflick 2020. I easily uploaded my photos into a short video. my very first photo was the moon shot hand-held.
I've had this camera for just short of a year now and although the instructions are very basic, I've learned a lot from watching YouTube. I've taken numerous photos of sunsets and sunrises and am having a great time learning the fundamentals of this camera. Most of my photos have come from my cell phone and since getting this camera, I've learned that a good camera can produce much better photos than a cell phone. I've learned ISO / Aperature and other important things just watching more professional folks providing 'tips and tricks'. I'm loving this camera more and more every day. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could get into this 'hobby' but I think I'm doing okay!
Controls are much improved from the P900 . Awesome camera. Update; this model doesn't seem to focus as well as the P900 after using it awhile and the screen image is much larger than the actual picture taken, somewhat disappointing. So, I have reduced my rating from 5 to 4 stars.
I have to learn about the bells and whistles on this camera, but bought it for the zoom. Pictures are at a stadium and I zoomed in to a bird on the far light post. No tripod, and seemed to be pretty stable until near the end wear I could have zoomed a little more with a tripod. Was able to crop some other pics and they turned out well. So far, happy with this purchase. Everything came in the case, and it arrived in a timely manner.
I hesitated, thinking it might overwhelm me with its complexity... had many questions that were unanswered. Yet, even shooting the hummingbirds (through a somewhat grungy window, feeder 20-ft away) was AMAZINGLY simple for a 1st day “practice round”! I tried the moon (a fractional crescent) at night, which only confirmed that I need a good tripod. It ‘boots’ pretty quickly, zooms with superb ease, and feels to be exceptionally well-built. Glad I didn’t hesitate any longer... there are a lot of ‘Modes’ yet to be mastered here!
Excellent camera with excellent zoom. I also have Nikon DSLR, but to get this type of Zoom on DSLR you will need 2000mm lense which will be very expensive.
This camera is fairly specialized to the job of photographing wildlife - the main challenge there is often the range, and the 2000mm maximum focal length (35mm equivalent) optical zoom does a great job of bringing distant birds in for decent images. Image quality is definitely better when the range is shorter, but I've gotten some fair shots of larger birds at 200-300 yards of range. Since they are wary and have good vision, this can be about as close as you can get without spooking them sometimes.
P950 is baby Nikon only in comparison to P1000. Lighter and smaller than his mom, P950 still has one of the longest optical zooms, 83X (P1000 has 125X), with good image stabilization, and ability to shoot in RAW format. It's main use is ultra-long shots (wildlife), although it is pretty decent for all around travel photography. I shot pretty good HD videos with it, at 50X zoom of willets running in the salt march. Pre-programmed bird format is the best feature, as it is with P1000, silent shot which has a tiny focus window which allows to focus automatically on the target partially obscure by the other objects (which tend to deflect AF away). I use bird preset for all sorts of wildlife photos, including bears and wolves which also tend to keep to bush or other vegetation.
After extensive research, this camera was the perfect solution I was looking for to shoot long distances. (Mostly birding). It’s pricy for a point & shoot but affordable and much more convenient than long lens alternatives for a DSLR camera body. So if your priority is the super zoom, this camera is a great value for the money! It’s not the best picture quality (compared to a DSLR with a larger sensor) but the image quality is not disappointing... as long as you’re not blowing it up or printing large. I chose the P950 over the P1000 because it is more comfortable to shoot handheld and bring on short hikes or to the zoo. The image stabilization is great but I’d still recommend a tripod and a basic understanding of manual settings is recommended to really get the most out of this camera.
I am not a photographer but I love traveling. It shoots vivid images from afar.
I purchased the P950 and have been blown away by it. The camera has several programed settings that make birdwatching photos easy, moon photos easy, both of which were huge concerns of mine going in. It is listed as a "point and shoot" but I would say nothing is quite that easy. It will take a little "learn the camera" time, but now that I have invested that time I am hugely satisfied with the purchase, so much so that I am selling my old camera. Never thought I'd say that.
I bought this camera after looking at many cameras. I have a Sony a200 that is over 15 years old but still works well, I just wanted to upgrade to a newer camera and this was my choice. I read many reviews about the Nikon and made the purchase. I have only taken a few pictures with so all I can say is that so far I am very happy.
I enjoy taking pictures and videos. This is a fantastic point and shoot camera (but there are a LOT of settings you can manipulate if you want). It's good for me since sometimes I don't want to have to carry around a lot of gear with me. Friends are always asking what camera I use because the shots turn out so well. Love the zoom!
I have used cameras from Nikon for decades and I must say, they are very reliable, quality construction. I'm still learning this camera but focal length is amazing.
I got this camera a week ago and I have been thrilled with its performance. I have been out almost everyday taking wildlife shots in my area. I have several cameras, including DSLRs and for walking around shooting just wildlife. This has jumped to the front of the line as my favorite. I feel I have gotten some amazing pictures that I do not think would have been possible with any of my other cameras.
Others who know more about this stuff have already chimed in, so I'm just joining the chorus: fantastic camera, it is very easy and takes beautiful photos! love the zoom and image stabilization.
I have had the camera for about a year and have had a lot of fun shooting with it. It is an affordable super zoom camera. I have had a lot of fun with this camera. It is easier to carry around than a DSLR with a couple of lens. It is fun to shoot photos of birds and wildlife. Enjoy it if you get one.

I specifically purchased this camera for birding, and, to a lesser degree, nature photography. I can avidly say, mission success!! As my birding enthusiasm became more advanced, I found myself wanting better zoom capabilities. This camera has been a game changer, I absolutely love the bird setting, and pretty much use it for all my wildlife photos (including bees). I'm definitely no professional, but as a very enthusiastic amateur, I can definitely recommend this camera.
