Positives : -Autofocus followed a wakeboarder spiraling through the air at 30mph just fine. -Noticeably faster UI. D810 always hesitated reviewing photos. -Screen tilts. I love this. -Screen is actually sharp enough to manually focus on people with my tilt shift, which is a fantastic new experience for nikons. -resolution is very good but still noticeably less than my 50mp phase one or the fuji GFX i tried (both of which also recover highlights much better) -highlights seem better, not sure by how much but i don't think it is my imagination -The grip doesn't make my index finger numb like the d800/d810 did. Negatives: -about the same in low light as the d810 -XQD cards are expensive and need a special reader -All of my current 95mbs SD cards won't shoot more than 6 frames in burst. -I genuinely hate buying new things from nikon because it usually ends up defective. (but not always, like my D810)
I purchased this camera body as an upgrade from my D810. Since I purchased it just recently, I cannot provide a comprehensive look at the camera yet. However, having taken nearly 1000 "practice" shots to learn how things work with my lenses, I can say that photos are even sharper than with the D810, the programmed mode works well for me when photographing movings animals and birds and it works noticeably better in low light than my D810. The body is just about the same size as the D810 and the weight seems similar in my hand. Adding my Nikon 70-500mm telephoto adds enough additional weight that I will most probably use my monopod when using this combination on my next photo safari to Africa in December. So far with the relatively limited usage involved, I'm very happy with my purchase.
This is my 7th Nikon DSLR body, starting from a d70 many years ago. All have been incrementally better than the last. This D850 is to compliment my D4S and replace (probably) my D800E. This is the first time I've felt that a new body was a total game changer. Short of the lack of an integrated vertical grip and the 11 frames per second id does everything that the D4S does, but better and more. The "changer" factor is the ability to shoot in near darkness and resolve actually good photos. ISO 20,000... meh. After some DXO processing they look great! Tracking soccer and lacrosse players on the field.. no problem. Focusing in the dark.. no problem. Put it in "auto" and hand it to someone expecting decent results.. no problem. I'm not a video guy so I'll have to lend it to a trusted friend to get some handle on its ability there, but as a pure photo tool.. It's just fantastic.
Exactly what I wanted and more!
Wildlife photography
The first time I took a picture with this beast it amazed me. I loved how clear my pictures turned out and how vivid the images looked. The settings on the camera take some time getting used to especially if you are a new photographer and have never used Nikon equipment. You will be able to catch on quickly though and learn the ins and outs of your camera! I am a big dslr fan I prefer the mirror and I don't think I will trade this camera for anything because it is a very great camera and has everything you need. It is a little on the heavy side for a camera but most dslr's are generally heavier than other cameras so it wasn't a huge difference for me.
I love this camera...in the sense that it is well-made and does what I'd like it to do. I got it for wildlife but with all it's features I can use it for much more. Setting it up is complicated and I would recommend finding a Youtube vid to help you. There are plenty of those and they don't all agree. I found Mark Smith's suggestions and guidance very helpful. If you do shoot wildlife, Carry an extra memory chip and some extra batteries.
So sharp! Detail is amazing! Stop scrolling through reviews! Get it!
The best Nikon full frame DSLR hands down. Great low light (i.e., dark sky) performance.....check out the photonstopixels data on noise (which is not caused by ISO but that's another discussion) and dynamic range. Very pleased with this camera!
