Just before I retired, I realized that it was now or never to make the final investments in life when it comes to lenses and cameras. The D500 was just out as was the D7500, its cheaper cousin. Not the same AF sensor, smaller buffers, lighter weight, and cheaper SD cards! The rest is as identical it can be! I shoot birds mainly, but also wildlife, macro, and family. Now, many tens of thousands of shots later, it is still awesome. I got my first SLR in '68, a full kit, and I have used close to everything there is under the sun, even Leica 3, Hasselblad 500 C, and a lot more. The verdict is that this D7500 is the best camera, yet, for my needs. It works great at ISO 32,000 (when using the right PP software), which can be handy occasionally, it is quite quiet, which is a boon if you sit in a hide, it is very well weather-sealed, it never had any problems in the jungle in SE Asia, or in North Sea storms here on the coast. The grip is pretty hefty, suits me just fine (my hands are slippery), and there are very few times I would want a different camera. Well, using spot-metering on a bird inside a thick bush is not the easiest (my old D3300 is better), I have to confess. But tigers, storks, tree shrews, giant squirrels, and raptors in low light work great, no doubt about that. I love that it uses EN-EL15 batteries, as I have a few more cameras that use those. Nothing has fallen off, or even jammed, so, as yet, is the most durable camera I've had (my last six have all been Nikons). I find its weight just right, almost identical to my FX camera the lightest FX DSLR ever made. Not taken much video with it, but it is 4K so it will suffice the day I need it!

The camera feels sturdy and I like that they improved the weather sealing. I need this because I often shoot in very harsh conditions. My D7100 held together very well, so I expect this new one to do well too. Another added feature that I absolutely love is the dedicated ISO button. It's rally quick to go from auto ISO, to non-auto ISO, and when setting auto ISO off, it's so much easier to change the ISO quickly. This is a great feature, and an upgrade. Even my old Coolpix P7700 had a dedicated ISO button! I always missed that. I do a lot of studio work. For that I used my D7100 before I got the new camera. But I had to use a flash light to auto focus on my subject even with the lights on in the room. I no longer need to do this with the D7500. It autofocuses really well indoors. And, believe me, it's wonderful because, after a while, having to constantly use a flashlight becomes old to say the least. And speaking about flash work, I will be able to use the radio trigger now (with the SB5000). I think it's about time I have this ability . I love Nikon CLS and the radio trigger is a welcome addition to this camera. So this is also an upgrade.

I'm stunned with the image quality that's coming out of the Nikon D7500.

This camera is better than the D7200. Let me explain how. Many people gripe about the lack of 2nd SD card slot in the D7500. It's not 2011 anymore. SD cards are reliable, high capacity, and affordable. Need more space? Carry an extra SD card or two, they're the size of your postage stamp and cost about as much as a combo from a fast food joint. People also complain, "you can't put a battery grip on it!", the D7500 has a large battery that lasts up to 3x as long as comparable mirrorless cameras. I would never add a battery grip to make the camera heavier and bigger(just carry a spare battery in pocket if needed), and the battery life is already incredible as it is. What you gain over the D7200. A tiltable touch screen that DOESN'T LAG, many people don't talk about this but the touch screen is pretty good. The LCD screen looks good and performs good. It almost feels like my iPhone 11 screen in performance. You also get 4K video, a faster processor, a better LOW LIGHT sensor, and digital image stabilization (not for 4k video). On top of that, this camera has weathersealing (rain and dust proof), internal AF motor (use old AF lenses), has an LCD on top of the body that illuminates, and overall excellent build quality that IMO beats many mirrorless cameras in this price range HANDS DOWN.

As a professional photographer, I reccommend the Nikon D7500 as a daily camera that performs well in just about any situation.

For a DSLR camera the D7500 holds its own in a world where mirrorless cameras are taking over.

The biggest reason for going with a DSLR, and the D7500 in 2021 is LENS SELECTION. A Z50 has better AF than D7500, but as of writing this review there are only 2 lenses for the Z50, or you can buy from the limited selection of the expensive full frame Nikon Z lenses that cost nearly as much as the Z50 body. The D7500 has better low light AF performance than the Z5 (-2 vs -3). The Z6 uses expensive CFexpress cards. The Fujifilms mirrorless have great lens selection (but lack in Super Telephotos for wildlife), but their low light/high ISO perfomance lags behind. Build quality is a few notches lower than Nikon or Canon. The XS10 is a great camera with IBIS, but for $1500 with a kit lens it's overpriced, and doesn't look as appealing as the XT30 with retro styled dedicated exposure dials. Sonys have great AF, but their lens selection is all about quantity rather than quality. Menu systems are cumbersome. Sony A7 II lacks touch screen, and has very outdated AF. Sony A6400 is a great camera, but Sigma Primes 16/30 1.4 have no image stabilization and make for TERRIBLE video. Canon EOS RP and M6 II have great IQ, but lack features found in the D7500 or the other competitor mirrorless cameras. Lens selection, although slightly better than Nikons, is also behind and limited. They are very boring to use, and they have the "on/off" dial on the WRONG side.
