I purchased an R6 (great camera) but as I aspire to photograph birds in flight, it became clear to me that the R5 would allow deeper cropping of photos so I returned the R6 and purchased the R5. If you have an array of quality Canon EF L lenses, they work beautifully with the R5 and R6. My personal opinion is that the R5 does everything well and is the most versatile camera body in the Canon line up. The eye human and eye animal capability is extremely fast and accurate making this camera a great choice for this challenging form of photography. I highly recommend this camera to photographers with legacy Canon glass. The higher end camera bodies by Sony, Nikon, Canon and others are so good these days that switching lens systems for a temporary lead by one of these Companies in technology no longer seems wise or needed in my opinion.
The auto focus is next level. If you are into portrait or animal photography this camera just locks on to the face and eye. Making it much faster to shoot moving subjects. Oh and auto focus points covering the entire screen, that's the best thing about mirrorless cameras.
Video 4K HQ looks amazing. I've not had any overheat problems, I shoot multiple 2 min or less clips, combined with photos, and a few 120fps clips.
I think the auto focus, image quality and 4K HQ are justifiable for the high cost of this camera as an early adopter.
For it's size it can do amazing things. If you would like to see video of 8K 60fps HDR video filmed with this camera I recommend "8k 60p Travel" on YouTube, as they exclusively use this camera.
I am primarily do photography, with little video. I purchased this camera for photo only. I recently purchased this camera. It is replacing a Canon Rebel series camera, so this camera is like upgrading from a beater car to a high-end sports car. So far, I am impressed with the AF speed, image quality, and resolution. I think Canon really nailed the RF system and my lenses work great with EF adapter and my new RF lenses.
I chose this camera after a careful search. I waited to see what would succeed the 5D Mark IV. The R5 checked all of my boxes. I compared with a few of the Sony offerings. If you do not need 8K video, I think Sony is the superior product for video, but Canon is really geared for photography, especially considering the quality of their lenses. I opted for the extra price for the R5 over the R6 due to the sensor resolution better meeting my photography styles. I strongly considered a swap to Sony as I have a minimal investment in EF lenses (several EF-S). I have average sized hands (Medium-Large glove) and just was not happy with Sony's ergonomics. The R5 & R6 excel at this ergonomics. Sony bodies all felt too small and hard to hold securely.
Camera overheats after shooting in 8k
Very nice camera, but a bit too pricey. A must have for any professional photographer. Great for weddings and other events. Stunning in low light situations and ridiculously fast. Fantastic image quality in 8K, amazing pictures, 4K HQ is a blessing when I am recording externally. I love the 12 fps mechanical and 20 fps all electronic. I also really like the video options they put into this camera. The ability to pull a high res photo from a video is really fantastic. Menu's are very easy to navigate. Overall, a great quality mirrorless camera from Canon !
